The South Carolina Historic Aviation Foundation (SCHAF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the state's rich aviation legacy. Their primary focus is the restoration and display of the rare North American B-25C Mitchell bomber, known as "GF-2." This specific aircraft is the only surviving member of the fleet used to train the legendary Doolittle Raiders at the Columbia Army Air Base during World War II. Recovered from Lake Greenwood after 39 years underwater, it now serves as a centerpiece for education and history.
The foundation hosts a monthly event, typically on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Held at Hangar Y-1 at the Jim Hamilton - L.B. Owens Airport in Columbia, SC, the event invites the public to view the ongoing restoration of the B-25C and explore various aviation artifacts. It offers a unique opportunity for families and aviation enthusiasts to connect with local history and see a piece of WWII heritage up close.
